Denmark and Northern Ireland will face each other in UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying Group H this week. The match between Kasper Hjulmand’s side and Michael O’Neill’s team will be held at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen and is scheduled to kick off at 7:45pm UK time on Friday.
Denmark
Denmark have progressed a lot as a team on the pitch in recent years and are now a force to be reckoned with, especially in European football. The Danes qualified for the 2022 Qatar World Cup amid huge expectations and hype, but they could not really make an impact at the tournament. Kasper Hjulmand s side drew with Tunisia, lost to France and went down to Australia and finished at the bottom of Group D and got knocked out.
The Danes will be determined to qualify for the UEFA Euro 2024 finals. Denmark kicked off their Group H qualifying campaign on with a 3-1 victory over Finland at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen. It followed a shock 3-2 loss at the hands of Kazakhstan away from home at the Astana Arena in Astana. Atalanta forward Rasmus Hojlund scored both the goals for Denmark.
Denmark did well at the UEFA Euro 2020 finals. They finished second in Group B with three points from three matches, six points behind groups winners Belgium, and progressed to the Round of 16. After hammering Wales 4-0 in the last-16 tie, they got the better of the Czech Republic 2-1 in the quarter-finals before losing to England after extra time in the semi-finals.
Team News:
Manchester United s Christian Eriksen, Tottenham Hotspurs Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Crystal Palace s Joachim Andersen and Bournemouth s Philip Billing all will start for Denmark against Northern Ireland. Brentford trio of Mathias Jensen, Mikkel Damsgaard and Mathias Jorgensen are part of the Denmark squad as well, alongside Barcelona s Andreas Christensen, AC Milan s Simon Kjaer and RB Leipzig s Yussuf Poulsen.
Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland are one of the lesser teams in European football, but there have been some encouraging signs in recent years. Northern Ireland qualified for the UEFA Euro 2016 finals in France and reached the Round of 16 at the tournament. They did do their best to qualify for the UEFA Euro 2020 finals and the 2022 Qatar World Cup finals, but they could not get it over the line.
Michael O’Neill’s side are fifth in the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying Group H table at the moment. Northern Ireland have picked up three points from two matches so far in the qualifying campaign. Slovenia, Denmark, Kazakhstan, Finland and San Marino are the other teams in the group, so the Green and White Army will at least fancy their chances of ending up third in the table.
Northern Ireland kicked off their qualifying campaign with a 2-0 victory over San Marino away from home at the San Marino Stadium in Serravalle. Bolton Wanderers forward Dion Charles scored both the goals for the visiting team. Northern Ireland then lost 1-0 to Finland just days later at Windsor Park in Belfast.
Team News:
Leicester City defender Jonny Evans will start at the back for Northern Ireland alongside Craig Cathcart and Ciaron Brown in a 3-5-2 formation. Steven Davis, Stuart Dallas, Conor Washington and Corry Evans are not part of the squad, while Callum Marshall, Aaron Donnelly, Lee Bonis and Sean Goss all are uncapped.
Key Factors to Consider
Denmark have scored 5 goals in 2 UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying Group H matches.
Denmark have conceded 4 goals in 2 UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying Group H matches.
Northern Ireland have scored 1 goal and conceded 2 in 2 UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying Group H matches.
Northern Ireland have won 2 and lost 3 of their last 6 competitive matches.
Denmark have lost 3 of their last 4 competitive matches.
Conclusion
Denmark have a better team than Northern Ireland and are also at home for the match. It is hard to see the Danes slip up. While Northern Ireland could score a goal, Denmark should find the back of the net two or three more times and pick up all three points from the encounter in the end.
