Guardiola: A little bit crazy for Manchester City to think about the title

Pep Guardiola thinks it is crazy for Manchester City to think about catching Liverpool – although his declaration that the Premier League title race was over following his side s 4-1 victory at Burnley was laced with sarcasm.

City headed to Turf Moor on a run of one win in five matches across all competitions, but last season s domestic treble winners looked something like their old selves as a fine Gabriel Jesus double set up a commanding triumph.

Rodri s blistering strike from outside the area was the pick of the bunch and substitute Riyad Mahrez also got in on the act before Robbie Brady netted a late consolation for the hosts.

The result brought City back to within eight points of Premier League leaders Liverpool before Jurgen Klopp s men entertain Everton …

Roma 0-0 Juventus: The Visitors Confirm Their Seventh Consecutive Serie A Title

AS Roma hosted Juventus at the Stadio Olimpico in the round before last of the 2017/18 Serie A season. The game had been set to bear far more importance for the home side than for the visitors, with Juventus’ seventh consecutive league title all but confirmed and Roma fighting to take part in next season’s Champions League, but Inter’s defeat to Sassuolo at home changed everything. The Nerazzurri lost all chances of finishing above Roma and took all the pressure off the shoulders of the Romans. Juventus, however, still needed to get something in Rome in order for their triumph to be mathematically certain.

Pep Guardiola hopes his players come through international action unscathed

Pep Guardiola admitted he will face a nervous wait to see if all of his Manchester City players come through the international window unscathed ahead of a crucial run of games.

City kept alive the possibility of a second treble as they beat Newcastle 2-0 on Saturday to become the first team in the history of the FA Cup to reach the semi-finals in six consecutive seasons.

But the majority of Guardiola’s squad will now be heading off to play international football before the crunch Premier League fixture against title rivals Arsenal on March 31.

We were looking to be ruthless all around the pitch – Kane

Hat-trick hero Harry Kane was happy with the ruthlessness shown by England as they easily swept aside Albania 5-0 at Wembley Stadium to put themselves on the verge of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup.

Five first-half goals from the Three Lions sealed the victory on Friday, meaning that Gareth Southgate s team need just a point from their final game in Group I against the lowest-ranked team in the world, San Marino, on Monday.

Kane has come in for some criticism at club level this season after scoring just once in 10 Premier League appearances for Tottenham, but he was back to his best for his country, scoring a perfect hat-trick, with a header followed by one with his left foot and one with his right.

Speaking to BBC Radio Five Live after the win, Kane said: …

International Friendly: Japan 4 Zambia 3

Japan escaped with a 4-3 victory over Zambia on Friday in their final friendly before the FIFA World Cup.

Yoshito Okubo struck a brilliant late winner for Japan in the first minute of second-half stoppage time to salvage the win for his side, soon after Lubambo Musonda had equalised with an incredible strike.

Japan had looked on track to win 3-2 after Shinji Kagawa and Keisuke Honda both scored in the space of two second-half minutes at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, where Zambia led 2-0 in the opening half-hour.

But in the 89th minute, Musonda burst forward before unleashing a thunderous strike over Shusaku Nishikawa and, two minutes later, Okubo showed fine control to bring down a high pass and then power his shot into the net.

The win was Japan s fifth in a r…

Messi headlines Argentina squad for World Cup qualifiers as Dybala earns recall

Lionel Messi is yet to play for Paris Saint-Germain this season, but has been called up to Argentina s squad for their World Cup qualifiers next month, with Paulo Dybala making a long-awaited return.

Having led Argentina to Copa America glory, Messi made the shock switch from Barcelona to Paris earlier in August, though he is yet to make his debut for Mauricio Pochettino s team.

The 34-year-old, along with fellow former Barca star Neymar, is expected to make his bow against Reims in PSG s final game before the international break.

Messi, along with club-mates Angel Di Maria and Leandro Paredes, would then travel to South America for matches against Venezuela, Brazil and Bolivia.

However, despite Pochettino having given his blessing for Messi to play for h…

Scholes to Oldham: Alex Ferguson pupils who became teachers

After being appointed by Oldham Athletic, Paul Scholes becomes the latest former Manchester United star to have played under Alex Ferguson and gone on to become a manager.

Their record is mixed but the strong start made by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer since taking temporary charge at Old Trafford shows why Ferguson s old pupils continue to be in such strong demand.

Unlike former England team-mates Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, Scholes has opted for a low-key start to life as a manager by taking charge of his boyhood club.

The list of Ferguson s former players to have stepped into the dugout is a long one but here are some of the biggest names to have tried their luck.

Southampton 2-3 Manchester United: Instrumental Cavani inspires comeback

Edinson Cavani inspired a superb turnaround as Manchester United came from two behind to beat Southampton 3-2.

Jan Bednarek s header and a trademark free-kick from James Ward-Prowse had put Southampton in command at St Mary s Stadium.

But the introduction of Cavani for the second half proved a masterstroke by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that paid initial dividends in the 59th minute when he teed up Bruno Fernandes to halve the deficit.

He then met the midfielder s deflected shot with a diving header to equalise and had the crucial final say when he diverted Marcus Rashford s cross beyond Alex McCarthy in the 92nd minute, securing a record eighth successive Premier League away win for United.
