England World Cup winner Peters dies aged 76

Martin Peters, who was part of the England team that won the 1966 World Cup on home soil, has died aged 76.

The midfielder scored England s second in a 4-2 final win over West Germany at Wembley, joining West Ham team-mate Geoff Hurst – who famously grabbed a hat-trick in a thrilling game that went to extra time – on the scoresheet.

Peters had helped the Hammers lift the European Cup Winners Cup the previous year and spent over a decade with the London club, eventually leaving in 1970 after over 300 appearances.

His departure to Tottenham made transfer history, as he became Britain s first £200,000 player in a deal that also saw Jimmy Greaves move in the opposite direction.

Rumour Has It: Man City hopeful of signing Barca´s Messi

Lionel Messi s future has been the subject of much speculation but a reunion with Pep Guardiola is still very much in Manchester City s plans.

Messi has been disgruntled with his situation at Barcelona since the end of last season, despite head coach Ronald Koeman s insistence that his superstar captain is happy.

Four-time Champions League winner Messi unsuccessfully tried to force an exit in August, however there will be no legal clauses to stop him when his contract expires in June 2021.

TOP STORY – MESSI WANTED ON FIVE-YEAR DEAL

The City Football Group (CFG) is eyeing a 2021 swoop that will see Lionel Messi split time between their Premier League powerhouse Manchester City and MLS franchise New York City, according to the Telegraph.

MLS Review: 10-man Atlanta fall to Sporting KC as west trump east

Brad Guzan was sent off as 10-man Atlanta United were beaten 2-0 by Sporting Kansas City in a battle between the MLS Eastern and Western Conference leaders.

Atlanta goalkeeper Guzan was red carded in the first half and Western Conference pacesetters Sporting KC made the most of their numerical advantage, scoring two unanswered goals to reign supreme away from home on Wednesday.

Unbeaten in eight matches and riding a three-game winning streak, Atlanta dominated the opening 45 minutes and thought they had taken an early lead at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Atlanta star Josef Martinez scored in the sixth minute but it was overturned by the video assistant referee (VAR) for offside.

After Video Review, the goal for Josef Martinez has been disallowed for offside. …

Roma 0-0 Juventus: The Visitors Confirm Their Seventh Consecutive Serie A Title

AS Roma hosted Juventus at the Stadio Olimpico in the round before last of the 2017/18 Serie A season. The game had been set to bear far more importance for the home side than for the visitors, with Juventus’ seventh consecutive league title all but confirmed and Roma fighting to take part in next season’s Champions League, but Inter’s defeat to Sassuolo at home changed everything. The Nerazzurri lost all chances of finishing above Roma and took all the pressure off the shoulders of the Romans. Juventus, however, still needed to get something in Rome in order for their triumph to be mathematically certain.

Inter in talks for Perisic

Inter Milan are stepping up their efforts to recruit Croatian winger Ivan Perisic from Wolfsburg, .

The Nerazzurri will see a number of attack-minded footballers leave this summer, with Xherdan Shaqiri and Lukas Podolski already gone, and they see the Croatia hotshot as a good addition to the squad.

It is believed that Wolfsburg would consider offers in the region of €18 million for their prized asset, and that is clearly within Inter s price range.

While they are also trying to bring Stevan Jovetic to Giuseppe Meazza, the Nerazzurri are already in talks with the Wolves and they appear to be closing in on Perisic.

The 26-year-old joined Wolfsburg from Borussia Dortmund in January 2013 for €7.5 million, so it is clear that the Bundesliga side are set …

Pogba indispensable but has to raise his game, says Deschamps

Paul Pogba is indispensable to France but needs to raise his game, according to head coach Didier Deschamps.

The Manchester United midfielder was whistled by some fans when he was substituted during the 3-1 win over Italy on Friday, prompting Deschamps to jump to his defence.

Pogba has had a frustrating 2018, having struggled for form at club level while his relationship with manager Jose Mourinho reportedly soured, although he was named United s player of the month for April.

Deschamps nevertheless has no doubts about the 25-year-old s importance to his World Cup plans, although he does admit his performances must improve.

Sevilla in talks over Lenglet extension to fend off Barcelona interest

Sevilla have received no offer from Barcelona for centre-back Clement Lenglet and are in talks with the Frenchman regarding a contract extension that will increase his release clause, according to club president Jose Castro.

Lenglet has gained many admirers since joining Sevilla from Nancy in January 2017, quickly securing a first-team role under Jorge Sampaoli and remaining a key figure this season, playing 35 times – more than any of his team-mates – in LaLiga.

Reports of Barca s interest were prominent for much of the campaign and there have even been claims the club already have an agreement with Lenglet.

But Castro insists he sees no reason not to be optimistic about Sevilla s talks over a possible contract extension for Lenglet, as they hope to inc…

Kawasaki edge Nagoya, Scolari´s men beat Pohang

Kawasaki Frontale battled back from a goal down to beat fellow J-League side Nagoya Grampus 2-1 in the first leg of the AFC Champions League quarter-finals here on Wednesday.

Lanky Australian striker Joshua Kennedy headed home in the 27th minute for Nagoya but Japan midfielder Kengo Nakamura pulled one back for Kawasaki on the hour mark and Brazilian striker Juninho put them ahead three minutes later.

Kawasaki, who have not lost to Nagoya in their recent nine encounters, go to Nagoya in the return leg on September 30 to vie for a semi-final berth in the top Asian club competition.

We had a few chances but could not put them away in the first half, Kawasaki coach Takashi Sekizuka said.

Kengo s goal shook the kinks out of our play and helped us regain ou…

Terry determined to slay spectre of failure

England captain John Terry believes he will be haunted by a sense of failure until the end of his days if he doesn t win either the Champions League trophy or the World Cup before he stops playing.

With Chelsea going well in Europe under Carlo Ancelotti and England currently regarded as third favourites for next year s World Cup in South Africa, Terry knows that, at 28, this season could be the one that defines his career.

This is my biggest season ahead of me and it s important to stay fit and keep playing well for Chelsea, Terry said ahead of England s trip to the Ukraine for Saturday s penultimate qualifier.

Fabio Capello s squad have already qualified for the finals but the Italian has made it clear that no player can take their place in the squad for South…

Neymar in frame for Cordoba match

Barcelona forward Neymar could feature against Cordoba at Camp Nou this weekend after returning to training on Friday.

The Brazil international missed the goalless draw against Getafe last time out in La Liga and was not part of the much-changed side that hammered Huesca 8-1 in the Copa del Rey on Tuesday.

But he is back in contention, with head coach Luis Enrique confirming that a decision will be made over the 22-year-old s participation on Saturday, when Barca will look to close the gap on leaders Real Madrid to one point.

Neymar trained with the rest of the squad and he s available, Luis Enrique said.

Neymar is enjoying a stellar campaign, with 11 goals in 13 league appearances.

He will hope to play some part as Barca seek a response to …
